About Me

My name is Jeff and I am a full-time professional science tutor with a passion for teaching and a track record of helping students raise their grades, improve their self-confidence, and enjoy subjects they once disliked and struggled with. I live in Downtown Brooklyn with my wife and two sons.

My Academic Background

I graduated from the University of Virginia with a B.A. in history. I then completed a pre-medical post baccalaureate program at Hunter College receiving a 4.0 GPA. I scored in the 95th on the MCAT exam and was accepted to SUNY Downstate Medical School. While working as a gross anatomy instructor at the medical school, I realized that teaching was my true passion which ultimately led me to change careers and pursue tutoring.

Teaching Method

Over the past several years, I have created a fine-tuned method for teaching two of the most difficult topics: physics and organic chemistry. Having taught these topics for several years, I know what concepts are the most difficult for students to grasp. Therefore, I have devised a large collection of simple analogies and metaphors to help students bridge this gap in understanding. Additionally, I have a unique way of presenting the material which is different from how most textbooks present it. Using my method, every idea naturally flows from the previous one. This allows students to scaffold their understanding from simple concepts to more difficult and abstract ones.

Teaching Style

My goal as a tutor is to help students accomplish their goals. To that end, I have found that creating a casual, low stress environment is crucial to facilitate learning and it allows students to be honest about what ideas they are struggling with. I also try to make my sessions fun - studying does not need to be a chore, and in fact can be enjoyable and interesting when you have a skilled guide to help navigate you through this tough material. I will never make you feel bad about what you don’t know or lose my patience - we are in this together. Furthermore, I will provide you with the confidence to feel like you can master these topics and succeed in your class.

As a courtesy to my students, I make myself available to my students outside of lessons, via email or text, in order to answer homework or study questions whenever they arise.
